I will be moving so my miniature/pony mix will be trailered. He has been only a few times in the past with my wonderful morgan who is no longer with us.

I have a small 2 horse trailer which I will be filling the empty side with hay and other things so he has to only stay on the one slot. He is about 39 inches high to his withers. I found a ton of articles online for small ponies and it was 50/50 to tie and not to tie.

Just wanted to see some opinions/experiences here. Thanks.

IMO tying keeps the head up (choke can occur if lowering of head to eat hay net droppings). It is a myth that one should feed the horse during the trip! Depends on circumstances and how easy your horse acclimates to trailering. When I know that trailering will be an 8 hour trip, I feed electrolytes, granular the 36 hours before departure, to insure that there is significant water intake... and yes a hay bag to keep the horse busy. And I stop every 4 hours for 30 minutes to check horses, water and just rest from the balancing in the trailer. JMO

Thank-you MtRider for your post. It is a 3 hour trip to Westcliffe so not too bad. We will be stopping each hour just quickly so I can pop my head in the window to check. I also have a baby camera that I was going to setup to watch, too - although I’ll be driving so it might not be the best idea. I just hope it all goes smooth and he loves his new home like I hope we do :).
