Here's a critter I've seen around for several days now:

Image

At first I thought he was a gray chipmunk but not with that long tail. He's living in a chipmunk hole and his body is about 5 -6 inches long.

Is this a mouse? If so, what kind and will it cause me problems?

If not, what is is?

It's a bald squirrel (tree or ground.. not sure). Probably has mange.

You are correct, now that I look closer that is a squirrel's head and body shape. Here's a webpage on why a squirrel might lose all his hair:

Why Do Squirrels Lose Their Hair?

Quote:
Squirrels infected with mange or fungal diseases, or suffering from inherited conditions, often lose their hair.

I don't think his condition is mange as he does not scratch or bite himself and seems healthy and sprightly otherwise. But he sure looks funny.

mange is a horrible way to die. organs start to shut down and the animal dies a slow and painful death. It is not just losing fur. If I could eradicate one creature on earth, it would be the mange mite

If it is a tree squirrel, I hope it lives. If it is a chipmunk or other ground dwelling rodent, then to hell to them all.

Yes, that would improve the poor critters appearance considerably and keep him warmer. :thud:

I cannot figure out how he lived through last weeks cold weather with no fur.

It's okay, CnT. You are among friends. Please be honest, it's okay to share your true feelings, here. What do you really think about them? :animated laughing:

JM, I can see how freeze dried rodents would be easy enough to dress (as long as you protected your fingers from frostbite), but how do you get them to pose? :raisedeyebrow:
