Hmmm... Natural gas production in the USA is at an all time high. Yes, it's the last link in the distribution chain - local distribution that is the big dollar increase.

and this is where CNG is preposterously high. Both Xcel and CNG charge about $0.24 per therm for the gas itself. Xcel adds another $0.22 for a total of about $0.46 plus a $14.44/mo service charge. CNG is charging us another $1.53 per therm plus a $16/mo service charge(plus 3 more taxes and fees). Seriously, that is 7 TIMES the overhead! Complete rip-off and they need to be taken over.

Well, I have never found CNG to be a particularly reliable or responsive company in my 21 years dealing with them. 15 years ago we had to have the line moved for a new garage. It literally took them 9 months to get the gas line buried after they just ran the new one across the yard. Had to threaten a lawsuit to get them to finish the job. They were supposed to replace my gas meter on a specific date last month and they were a no-show. Not a big fan, but sadly the only alternative currently is LP gas...

Over the past couple of months, I have been researching to understand WHAT IS GOING ON with our foothills-area Colorado Natural Gas (CNG) rates!? Do you think your most recent summer bill was low? Think again and be prepared for next winter to cost you tens of hundreds of dollars more (in fact, as the current rates stand, I expect to pay over $1,000 more on Natural Gas (NG) this next year over last). Here are the facts as they stand (graph was reviewed for accuracy by a Colorado Public Utilities Commission (COPUC) analyst).

Image

Since October 2018 Colorado Foothills CNG Customers:

- Have received or had enacted 3 rate letter increases resulting in a 44% increase in per-therm gas cost (Xcel customers went up only 11% over the same period to account for the colder than expected winter)
- Now pay more than even contracted propane customers for a therm of gas (i.e. tank rental and delivery included). Local Propane rates are ~$1.72/therm contracted and ~$1.36/therm if you own your own tank.
- Pay 2.64 times as much for a therm of NG than local Xcel customers. (CNG is $1.84/therm while Xcel is ~$0.70)
- Should expect to pay a lot more money this next winter and winters to come with all the CNG-requested and COPUC-approved rate increases.
- Pay more per therm for NG than any CNG (or Summit Utilities who owns CNG) customers. In addition, from what I can find online, we pay more than anyone and anywhere else in the continental U.S. for residential NG.

What CNG customers can do?
1. Make this issue personal by verifying your rate. It’s easy. Take the total amount due at the bottom right of your CNG Bill (mine was $55.14 on the July bill I just received). Subtract the “Fixed” $16 Service and Delivery Charge. $55.14 – $16 = $34.14, which represents nearly all variable usage. Divide this amount by the number of THERMS located at the top third of the bill in the center (mine was 21.27162 THERMS) $34.14 / 21.27 = $1.84 is the Cost of gas Per Therm. Take your per therm cost times the highest monthly THERM usage last winter and prepare to gasp at what your monthly winter NG bill is about to be.

2. Next use this information, which is now personal to you and KINDLY email your State Representative and the Governor and let them know of your situation and about to face this winter. https://leg.colorado.gov/find-my-legislator Timing is critical to create this message now to affect change soon. (I have made COPUC very aware of this and the next-best pressure point will be our representatives).

Your help in bringing attention to this issue is greatly appreciated (because we will all benefit if successful).
