In our new place, there is only room for a stackable washer dryer or a combo unit. A stackable is out of the question because of back issues. Does anyone use a combo unit? Comments, suggestions?

I’ve used those combo units in Europe & I hope they are better here, but I don’t know. The continuous struggle was to get the laundry dry more than about 80-90% of the way. Good luck!

stackable is out because you have a bad back? to lift one on top of the other or to reach up? if it is the former, there are plenty of people who could help you get it up there
if you are talking about the ones that do both in the same unit, you can do research here. You can purchase a 30 day membership to use all of the resources on the site.

I agree with Lisa, they do not dry clothes completely. I had a combo unit in my last apartment and it was useless. They also so not let you remove the clothes that you don't want to dry in the dryer.

Maybe you could use a stackable if someone can raise the height for you , depending your ceiling space , but I have seen them raised for your back issue. Just a thought to help you out.

I have an LG combo unit WM3997HWA and it's been great. You can set it to wash and dry or just wash then take out items you don't want left in the dryer. I usually set the dryer to "no Spin" to dry clothes faster. Clothes feel damp when you take them out but after about 30 seconds to one minute they actually are dry. They use ventless condensing drying which pulls the moisture out of the clothes and is much easier on your clothes than the high heat of regular dryers. It takes longer to dry clothes but I'm in no hurry, I'm retired. I have it on the pedestal so there is no bending over or reaching up to put the clothes in or remove them. It was expensive ($2,000) but it was the best solution for me compared to what I had. It works fine for me.

when you consider that it is both a washer and a dryer, the $2K is reasonable. I found this one at Sears for only $1,100

I'm so glad to see that they have improved! We lived in London in the late 90s and had one of these. It was better than dragging clothes to the laundry mat - I just planned on one whole day per load to wash and dry. It was located in the kitchen of our flat - worked fine. But again, one day per load and we just planned accordingly.

It sounds like they have improved and if so, it would definitely be worth it. You're retired and have the time - why not?

The traditional stackable has a vented dryer and works great but I have a portruding disk in my back, it's hard to get the clothes out without bending, twisting and lifting all at the same time to get the clothes out of the washer. That leads to pinched nerve. It's that triangle between the washer dryer that's the problem.

I'm sorry Monchilads thought maybe making it higher might help you. I know nothing about the combo type. Just experienced the raised stackable on cement and wood framed, they were probably 4 inch to 5 inch. Good luck , the others sound informed .

No problem. I had your same thought, buy a combo and raise it up. Just want to make sure they work well before I buy one. Asking g people who have one is the best way to know.
