I just got back from Safeway. As of today, Safeway is charging 10 cents per bag, for both paper or plastic bags.

So being surprised as if I had known, I would have brought some bags. The cashier assured me there are signs "everywhere". I looked on my way out and didn't see a single notice. I looked on the latest sale paper and didn't find any notice nor could I find one on the website.

Did you know about this new charge? The lady behind me had a huge basket full of groceries and didn't look too pleased when she heard about my bag charge.

I had prepared a zillion plastic bags to recycle at Kings but forgot them the other day. Good thing.

It's a new state law. It's been in the news everywhere for quite awhile. All the stores are required to charge 10 cents a bag.

I saw a few discussions on Nextdoor about this.
I thought it was for King Soopers.
I typically don’t bring my own because I reuse the plastic ones for disposing of cat litter. A bag a day adds up.

I had just made up my mind to keep a pile of cloth bags in my car. I’m not paying for bags.

This is becoming death by a thousand cuts…

Had heard that starting the first of the year stores were going to discourage using their bags by charging for them, per some new state law. Last summer unexpectedly we paid 10 cents per bag at Walmart. We've used our own bags for years. Got so tired of having all those grocery bags over the years. Better for the planet this way.

Just buy a few of their big rectangular fold out box type carriers with handles. It takes three for two of us doing weekly groceries. They hold up a long time and are so easy to pack, unpack and carry. I forgot them only once and found the plastic bags sag and tear and roll around the car.
I also had about 9 to carry in the house. The fold out carriers hold so much you only need a few. They do not tip or roll. They sit nicely in the car. I highly recommend getting them and the handles are long enough to hang on your shoulder if you need your hand to carry something. Their low price will be made up quickly when
Plastic is 10 cents each. I think they are around $3
It has been quite a while since I had to buy any.

I used to have the cloth bags too but these box type are so much better. No groceries slip sideways and spill or have lids come off. They also sit flat in car, no falling over.

The bag fee was approved by voters back in 2020 and became affective today statewide for both paper and plastic. It's been broadcasted on the local news as well as mentioned on the internet with other laws affective as of today.

The nice fold out bags are from Safeway. They used to place them on the end of the belt that goes to the register, then they moved them to the end where the person bags groceries. Since I have not had to buy them for a while I don’t know where they are now. Just ask someone, I bet with plastic not free anymore they will get them up front again so customers can purchase them.

Anyone from Safeway reading this please set the fold out boxes by the belt again. Gives people a chance to buy them before groceries are loaded into plastic. That is how I purchased mine.

California does this under the guise of helping the environment, but take$ a cut.
In other words, it's a tax.

I use boxes anyway, bags or no bags. Otherwise everything falls all over the back of the SUV, squishes or melts (insulated box). It's actually easier to just load boxes in the truck directly from the cart.

Great idea, because the plastic bags have never been great for holding groceries. Boxes are much better. I still like the long straps on the fold out ones because my fingers aren’t strong enough to hold a heavy box but my arms and shoulders work well for carrying groceries to the house.

Interesting that the charge ends up being a tax in California, aren’t they just sneaky little devils.
