What changed on 285 was the great increase in trucking since 2014 when it was wrongly used as a temporary alternate route for I70. Crow Hill was never a legal truck route with a 7% downgrade and no special speed limit for weight class. Simply reverse that decision by prohibiting passage past Highway 43 without a permit and signage. See my other post : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=243485 |

There was a plan drawn up around twenty years or so ago to remove Crow Hill completely from 285 by taking 285 straight ahead at the top of Crow Hill, moving the highway along the ridge above Bailey and the high school, and meeting "old" 285 near Shawnee.
I predict that that will have to happen sometime in the future because 285 is bound to look like I70 in the future. I remember when US6 used to look like 285. _________________ When I moved here there was nothing, now it's all gone. ![]() Mountain folk see the mountains when they drive. What made 285 an attractive route all of a sudden? How is 285 a shortcut to anywhere? Who, of the remaining 8000 people of Park County south of Bailey, is eating a semi-full of Lays potato chips (if that's the actual cargo) every couple days? Where are the King Super and Safeway stores that can only be reached by 285 through Bailey? Why do the same cargo semis not return northbound up Crow Hill? They had a route before this problem. What changed to cause them to by-pass it now?

What changed to cause them to by-pass it now? Well I know that there are at least a few northbound semis as too many of them have crashed in the section between Indian Hills and Route 8! I agree that the rules should be reversed to what they were pre-2014 as this road is simply NOT suitable for semi truck traffic. |

The problem won't be solved until CDOT increase the width of downhill traffic to two lanes, so that they can put a lower speed limit on trucks.
It is stupid to expect a truck to descend a 1000' grade at 50 mph and then negotiate a 35 mph curve where the grade increases. Concrete barriers will not prevent accidents .. _________________ “‘Democracy’ is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. The change on 285 at 68 from 2 lanes to one lane and the other being a turn lane is a pain for those of us trying to turn south on 285. Any by pass road would probably be taking private property away from the owners. Plus cause a reduction of income for the Bailey businesses. I think the answer is some STRONG signs ( yes more than one ) near the Loaf and Jug, maybe even those over head lighted ones that always state: rocks and animals. But these would state - STEEP HILL - go fast down this road and you will die. Or something to that effect. More than one sign, bright and huge. I am not joking. More than one sign and large! The 40 mph warning and then regular signs just don't stand out enough and are too close to Bailey. Further back and HUGE - flashing lights would help too. Cheaper than redoing the whole road. Thanks for letting us know about this meeting.
