I just read a news story on what people are cutting back on and what they are buying instead. I was curious to hear how you all are surviving the serious grocery raise in prices.
We buy no meat, only cut up pieces in frozen dinner, can chicken or tuna.
We remembered the days of Ramen soup and cans. Peanut butter, rice packets, salads, frozen meals that are mostly vegetables. We still eat eggs or blueberry pancakes with bacon. Whole wheat bread, fruits. Still use butter & cheese. Buy mostly generic foods. Bonus, I don’t cook much and I have cut our bill by $50 most weeks. Ramen, rice packets and frozen taste way better than they used to. Thank goodness! Any other good ideas?

That would not work for me at all.
I’m having an MSG headache just reading this post. I can not handle all the additives and such things that are in packaged and frozen meals never mind the high sodium.

We are what we eat. I still buy fresh fruits and vegetables and poultry, meat and fish on sale and prepare nourishment around those things. Brown rice and oatmeal are staples. Because I got in a good groove only shopping once every couple of weeks to a month from covid craziness I still do that. It eliminated impulse buying and kept me to a strict list for meal planning. I prepare good whole real food on the weekends and freeze it in portions to enjoy through the week because I work and I’m tired when I get home. I make my own convenience food.
Now that it’s required to label for bio engineered foods, I’ve stopped purchasing anything with those ingredients.
I only go to the grocery store on work days that put me on the highway and halfway to the store so I’m not wasting gas on a grocery run. That is also the day I collect my mail and load up on pellets and any other errands I can think of.

To mitigate rising prices I got rid of other things. As an example,
I’ve eliminated dish tv ( there’s a reason it’s called programming).

I’m enjoying books I’ve had for awhile that I didn’t make time to read because the tv was on.

Nice choices! You might have solved my problem with buying fragile foods, kale, bell pepper, etc that just rot because I can not use them all quickly enough. That’s why I buy frozen foods that fit Ornish diet. Pretty healthy. But if I cooked ingredients all at once and froze in small meals that would work too. Thanks.
Good on the TV, congratulations!
Maybe we all should go on a grocery strike. They think we can’t. I have enough cans for three weeks.... Ug!

I love to cook. Favorite things to make and freeze are my version of curried chicken and vegetables. I use colored peppers, onions and zucchini in that and the rest go into a vegetable and tomato sauce for pasta.

I buy lots of broccoli and stem it all and freeze what I won’t eat in a few days. I like it not too done so reheating doesn’t turn it to gray mush.

Always have carrots potatoes and other root veggies cold stored on hand.
Apples and pears keep well in my cool pantry.

I am not fond of cooking but one of us has to so I do. I rarely use prepackaged mixes or frozen meals but make everything from scratch. I haven't changed what we buy when grocery shopping too much due to the prices.

I do as JMiller does and usually make enough for several meals and freeze what we don't eat right away. On a hiking day when cooking is the last thing I want to do, I use one of the frozen meals.

I do have fresh vegetables such as potatoes and onions stored in a cold room but buy fruits that we can eat in a week or so. I also stock up on items on sale that will keep as canned goods, pastas, etc. We have a huge freezer and keep it stocked with sale items.

But I am dismayed that staples like eggs and butter have gone up in price so much. I have trigger prices for items we use and buy when an item hits that trigger price. But with prices rising so fast, I've had to recalculate when I buy items. I'll pay full price if I really need an item, like eggs, but it hurts my Scotch side.

Fortunately, I'm not very picky about food and I cook my own meals 95% of the time - today I'm doing Caribbean Stew (cubed round steak marinated in Worcestershire, pepper, and jerk seasoning, with onions, carrots, sweet potatoes and green and red peppers in tomato sauce, very yummy and great on cold days). I use coupons A LOT at both King Soopers and Safeway, and I'm always looking for bargains. Just got a free 16oz bag of cherries at KS, and 97 cent cans of Chunky soup at Safeway.
The egg thing has gotten ridiculous. Just saw 18 eggs at King Soopers for TEN dollars. I guess that's why the 'rent-a-chicken' thing is starting to get popular.

Groceries.......what do we buy: We too cannot deal with the Generic food due to all of the chemicals (MSG, Disodium Inositate and Disodum Guyanilate - all flavor enhancers). The Genetic Engineered part 'twists my crank'! Here's what I have gathered about that: Roundup (Glyphosates) is the most "popular" pesticide in the world. Even though Monsanto, the company who makes it, had to be bought out by Bayer (the German Company) because of all the lawsuits Monsanto lost over cancer. Now Glyphosates are used on MANY food products and is "Bioengineered". Although the pics and videos you see with guys in full hazmat suits spraying it on growing food-plants, the FDA says that the amounts left on our food is "Safe". It is used in the latter part of the growing cycle just before harvesting. So, that is one of the "Bioengineered" parts. Corn, Wheat, Palm Oil are also "Bioengineered". MY question is: why are some products by the SAME company labeled and others are not - Baked goods from KS for example?

It seems like anything that is ultra-processed. Not exactly a healthy diet. Spring fruit will help supplement that, however.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so just a reminder that as food prices rise and things get a bit tighter be sure to check your receipts. I shop at both KS and Safeway, but found KS to be really bad about online coupons and advertised prices. Just yesterday I bought 5 products which rang up at .94 each. That was all I bought, but the total was $6.51. I'm no mathmagicion, but I think that comes up to about $4.70, and there can't be over $1.80 in taxes on that purchase.
I went to customer service, and they had no explanation and refunded the money. Last fall I was overcharged by $2.40 on BBQ sauce, and just before Christmas I had a purchase which recognized no online coupons, or my card member discounts which should have been just over $10. Who knows how many others I missed.
