A or AN?
We all know the rule that you use 'an' before vowels, but there is a one-time exception to that rule. Except, as an honest man, I must admit there are times we use it before consonants as well. _________________ Great peace have they who love Thy law, and nothing shall offend them... Ps 118:165 |

Revised on July 17, 2023. A and an are different forms of the same word, the indefinite article that often precedes a noun. A is used before a noun that starts with a consonant sound (e.g., “s,” “t,” “v”). An is used before a noun that starts with a vowel sound (e.g., “a,” “o,” “i”). Note that the rule is not whether they start with a consonant or vowel, but whether they start with a consonant or vowel sound. This can help you decide which to use in difficult cases like words beginning in “u” or “h.” ... https://www.scribbr.com/commonly-confus ... ferent,%2C”%20“i”). _________________ When I moved here there was nothing, now it's all gone. ![]() Mountain folk see the mountains when they drive. What about before a number? Is it “a 87-foot widget”? Or “an 87-foot widget”? “8” begins with a vowel, right?
What about a letter? “A A1c test”? I would say, “An A1c”. Then there’s “a DNA test” or “an DNA test”. “D” does not begin with a vowel, but it is an abbreviation. Then, what about the use of “quote marks”. How often can they be “used” in one “sentence” about the use of “a” and “an”. Commas trip me up, too, I suppose. I use a lot, more than others, usually, most of the time, you see. One more, while we are at it, what does “is” mean? Is “is” a dangling participle? _________________ The life you’ve led doesn’t have to be the only life you live. |
