STILL HAVE BROADBAND QUESTIONS ??

COME ON DOWN TO THE COFFEE SHACK, SATURDAY DECEMBER 21, BETWEEN !:00 - 3:00 PM

THE BROADBAND COMMITTEE WILL BE AVAILABLE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

WE'VE GOT A SIGN UP EXTENSION. WE DON"T KNOW THE NEW CUT OFF DATE. WE WILL POST THE NEW DATE ONCE WE KNOW. WE DO KNOW IT WILL BE EARLY JANUARY.

IF WE ARE NOT SUCCESSFUL GETTING 50% OF BURLAND TO SIGNUP NOW TO APPLY FOR THE GRANT IN JANUARY, WE WILL CONTINUE THE SIGNUPS AND APPLY FOR THE GRANT IN JULY. OUR FEAR IS THAT EACH GRANT CYCLE IS BECOMING MORE COMPETITIVE.

WE RECEIVED AN EXTENSION!
Signup for Burland Fiber by January 12th.

Still Have Questions??
Call 303/838-7802. Carrie will answer your questions.

Go to Burlandfiber.com. Fact sheets are posted.

Go to the Coffee Shack
Saturday Dec 28 and Jan 4, from 1:00 – 3:00pm.
A Burlandfiber representative will buy you a cup of coffee and answer your fiber optics questions.

Go to Mad Jacks
Saturday Dec 28, from 1:00 – 3:00pm.
A Burlandfiber representative will answer your fiber optics questions.

Go to Aspen Peak Cellars
Sunday Jan 5, from 1:00 – 3:00pm.
A Burlandfiber representative will answer your fiber optics questions.

Why January 12th? South Park Telephone (SPT) is applying to the State of Colorado Rural Broadband Fund for a grant to pay for a majority of the construction costs. Grants become available twice per year, January and July. If SPT is not successful in January they will apply again in July. Each grant cycle is becoming more competitive as other communities become aware and apply.

$500 Signup Fee – Can’t afford $500 right now? You can make two $250 payments. One $250 payment with your commitment form now. The second $250 payment will be due prior to construction (stringing fiber on the power poles throughout Burland).

How do I pay for my signup fee? You have two options: 1. Send a check or 2. Use PayPal. For more information go to Burlandfiber.com

What happens to my $250 or $500 if SPT doesn’t receive a grant? SPT will give you the option to 1. refund your $250 or $500 signup fee, or 2. Offer to hold your signup fee until the next grant cycle.

What does the $500 Signup Fee cover? This fee pays for SPT to install the fiber optics cable from the power pole closest to your home, to an outside wall of your home.

Aerial or Underground? If your existing electric service is aerial, so will your fiber optics line. If your electric service is underground, so will be your fiber optics.

Can I sign up for fiber optics after it has been installed throughout Burland? Yes. However, the installation cost ($500 Signup Fee) will most likely be two to five times greater depending upon the distance from the power pole to the home and whether its is aerial or underground.

Speed Test
SPT would like to include as much data as possible to substantiate a grant award for this project. We need you to conduct an internet speed test at your home, and forward the results to SPT. It is important that testing is conducted using the
www.speedtest.net. Record your test results and email directly to David Shipley @ dshipley@usch.com

Burland Broadband update as of Friday, Jan 3rd, 2020.
.
Burlanders,

I'll be at Coffee Shack tomorrow to answer questions from 1-3pm. We'll also be glad to stamp, address envelope and mail any commitment forms or checks. If you can't make it tomorrow, I'll be at Coffee Shack next Saturday the 11th and the 18th. Also free coffee or smoothie. Open your calendar and add these dates.

You can also bring forms & checks to Aspen Peak Winery this Sunday, January 5th. Keith Doubleday and Sharon Graham will be there from 1-3pm. Get answers and free wine. https://nextdoor.com/events/3420524?ini ... link_share

Finally, you can come on January 11th at 9am at 106 Rosalie to the Burland HOA meeting. Sometimes we have snacks there too (if I get to store).

Good News! Here's our stats so far:
- The grant application is approx. 65% complete
- In receipt of approx. 180 commitments (more would be better)
- In receipt of approx. 60 speed tests (good number but more is better)
- In receipt of 50 letters of support (GREAT number but more is better)

Anything you do to increase these numbers will increase our chance of success.
So many in Burland are stuck with less than 1 Mbps internet (especially the east & south edges).
That is so 2005. Help bring us to 2020.
Jim

Dear Burland Neighbor -

We have great news to share! The Burland broadband grant proposal has been submitted!

To all of you who have committed to the broadband project so far, thank you very much for your participation. The grant proposal was submitted to the Colorado Broadband Deployment Board on Wednesday, Jan. 15. We are now in a 60-day comment period, following which the board will decide who will be awarded grants. So, we should know by sometime in early April whether we got a grant in this cycle or not. Meanwhile, we invite even more of you to sign up. It's not too late, and now is the time to get in at the lowest cost. When our grant is awarded, you will then be put into the installation schedule. If you don't get signed up during the initial project, it will be extremely costly for individuals to get fiber optics to their homes.

For more information, you may go to our website, http://www.burlandfiber.com for FAQs, a map of the project area, rates, a commitment form, and the opportunity to send in the first half ($250) of your commitment fee online or mail a check; send questions via email to burlandfiber@gmail.com; or call 303-838-7802.

That commitment fee covers the entire cost of installation of the fiber to your home. Studies show that getting broadband to a home increases its value by an average of about 3% – not a bad return on a $500 investment! We are excited about this grant that will help fund bringing fiber optics (extremely consistent high-speed internet services) to our community, and we don't want any of our neighbors to miss out on this opportunity!

From your neighborhood Burland Fiber volunteers:

Carrie, Cody, Emily, Erin, Jack, Jim G., Jim M., Julie, Keith, Mark, Sharon and Sue

According to South Park Telephone (SPT) 204 commitments were received by close of business January 12th. SPT had hoped that 650 would commit. That would have made the grant application much more appealing to the review board. SPT is still accepting commitments, however they will not count towards the grant.

We are hopeful that many more will recognize the benefit and commit to bringing fiber into our community.

Bringing fiber will:
Telecommute - Many of our neighbors attempt to work from home. Fiber will vastly improve their ability.

Medical Consulting - A rapidly expanding area is doctor/patient appointments via the internet ("may" save having to drive to the city).

Education - All levels, from elementary through college. Ever expanding online classes.

Increased Home Value - It has been estimated that having fiber increase the value of your home by 3%.
Realtors have told the burlandfiber workgroup that many prospective buyers ask if high speed internet service is available.

SPT has told burlandfiber that if there is a significant number of commitments they may reduce the monthly service fee. This offer won't be available once SPT begins to install the fiber.

While burlandfiber is taking a break until the Colorado Broadband Deployment Board meets we encourage you to signup. For more information, go to our website, http://www.burlandfiber.com for FAQs, a map of the project area, rates, a commitment form, and the opportunity to send in the first half ($250) of your commitment fee online or mail a check; send questions via email to burlandfiber@gmail.com; or call 303-838-7802.

Thanks for your support.

Channel 9’s NEXT news program at 6:00pm on Thursday did a good piece on broadband in rural areas and how it can have a favorable impact going forward, especially with new technology. Google kusa telehealth. Anyway, it isn’t just Burland. We are in competition with other communities. Keep signing up if you haven’t already. Who knows but maybe they can update that number at the end of the comment period, or somehow inform the board making the decision that interest is still growing. Maybe this is a good use of your tax refund, if you are one of those that get something back? $250 now and then again in April or May is a good investment in your home.
