I have strawberry spinach!!
I remember it from a pamphlet I use to have on edible plants.

The leaves resemble spinach and the berries look more like raspberry than strawberry.
I've never noticed it on my property before. But I have one now!
:kewl: huh!

The chickens are not interested in it so I decided not to taste it either

I have some volunteers that just came up in a old wheelbarrow along with a sunflower. I wondered what it was, but thought the red was an amazing intense color.

I guess they are considered to be quite tasty. Thanks for teaching me something today

Strawberry Spinach is one of the best-kept secrets of the herb world. A native American plant, this annual sets tiny, deliciously tender leaves that can be cooked like spinach or used fresh in salads. It also sets small red fruits in late summer and fall that taste a bit like mulberries and are lovely fresh or canned.

That was a true find. Did you taste the berries yet? I wonder if you can propagate it and have more next year.

You're welcome Angie!

Yes the color is amazing! Neither of our photos do it justice.

I might try to harvest some seeds and plant in a better location. It sure is pretty!

You can buy seeds from Baker Creek!

Okay so I decided to go taste it.

Well it might be edible, but it certainly is not tasty.
I like most leafy greens but not this. And the "berries" are not good either. I could swallow the greens, but not the berries.

I should have known since it has not been touched by my chickens, nor rodents nor deer.

However, it is good to know that it's edible if I am ever desperate for food.

Had some on the property in 2011: https://www.pinecam.com/forum/viewtopic ... e#p1273751

Hasn't come back since. This would be the year though, have to go searching.

Well, that's disappointing that the berries are not very tasty but they sure are pretty.

Leaves of edible plants are generally better tasting when they first come up. Waiting until the plant has used all its energy to produce a flower can make the leaves/greens bitter/stringy/tough.

HA! A friend in KZ Ranch asked me what this is. I had never seen it before. Thanks for identifying!

So true.

If it comes back next year, I'll give the leaves a nibble in the Spring. But I suspect those "berries" will always be puke.
