The last couple of days through the canyon have been fine. Very little delay. Quite orderly and smooth.

Thanks for this update.

A description of the work that's in progress now . . . https://kdvr.com/news/local/crews-begin ... of-us-285/
Quote:
“What we’re going to do is drill under the road about 30 feet and put what are called soil nails in and then put this welded wire mesh onto the facing of the gravel, and then tie the anchors into it to hold it on top,” Matt Tello, an engineering geologist with CDOT’s Geo-Hazards Program said. “Then, we’ll spray concrete on top of that to stabilize any type of erosion that would come out of the embankment.”

The repair is estimated to take six days in ideal working conditions. Delays are expected due to weather, so with that factored in CDOT is targeting to have this temporary repair complete by May 26. This work will take place Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The right lane closure on northbound U.S. 285 near Parmalee Gulch will remain in place for the duration of this repair work.

You still haven't figured out the zipper merge? Yes that DOES fix the situation to have each lane go to the END before merging. There just absolutely is NO defensible argument against this.

Nope, I understand the zipper merge very well, I'm usually the guy in the right lane going by everyone that's stopped, usually laughing. My point is, let folks do what they want to do. If they want to merge a mile before the lane ends I might find it dumb, but that's on them, not me. Being some passive aggressive jerk that won't let anyone get in front of them, and causing the person trying to merge to stop and block traffic in the process, is completely counterproductive.

I disagree . . . allowing them to continue in their incorrect driving habits perpetuates their behavior, thus perpetuating the problem. Teaching them the benefits of correctly employing the zipper technique furthers their driving skills, reduces congestion, reduces travel delays for everyone, and, most importantly, reduces frustration caused by the delays.

Education is always preferable to ignorance . . .

!TRAVEL ALERT! CDOT deploys an emergency contract to repair a washed out slope next to northbound US 285 near Parmalee Gulch in Jefferson County.

Emergency contract work is underway to stabilize a slope that washed out from the recent heavy rains last Friday, May 12. Motorists can expect a right lane closure on northbound US 285 near Parmalee Gulch. CDOT expects the temporary repair will be completed Friday, May 26.

CDOT secured a contract that started work on Thursday, May 18 on a temporary repair to stabilize the ground below the roadway. The work requires a specialty contractor that can use equipment that sits at the roadway level and reaches down into the scoured area to install reinforcing bars into the slope below the roadway.

I remember when they were widening 285 from Foxton to Richmond Hill and the zipper merge. I tried to follow the zipper merge and stay in the right lane but vehicles, mostly pickups, would pull out from left lane in front of me trying to run me off the road. It was ridiculous. and scary

I had to threaten a woman in a convertible that was driving northbound after Kings Valley straddling the line. We were going 3 miles an hour and each time I tried to pull around her she moved over in front of me and then would move back to block the guy coming up on her right.

I pulled out my phone and took pics of her plates, her , her car and said you pick a lane right now or I’m calling CSP (neener neener I’m Tellin!!!)

She said I’m just trying to get to work.
I said what the hell do you think everyone else is doing out here???

She pulled into the right lane the guy she was blocking on the right had already gotten around her and I waved as I moved further ahead of her inch by inch watching her head smolder in my rear view.

Yeah, good times …. :scrambles:

Some of your friends and neighbors on FB are still arguing that the zipper merge only works in theory and it’s practical application only achieves huge slow downs.

So plan accordingly, if you are using the right lane until the merge point as deemed appropriate , you will be seen as a line jumper and the cause of delays.

I don't care what they think and I think of them as something far worse than a line jumper. I also know there is NO defensible argument against the zipper merge. It is mostly a safety issue as the backup without zippering goes way farther back when people may be less expecting a slowdown - often even before there is a "construction ahead" warning sign.
