Ham Hocks in Sauerkraut Polish-Style

3 large ham hocks
2 cups sauerkraut
1 large onion, sliced into rings
1 tablespoon sugar
? teaspoon black pepper
Cooking Instructions:
Cover ham hocks with water and simmer for 1 hour. Drain well and add sauerkraut, onion, sugar, pepper and return to the heat. Simmer 1? -2 hours, until meat falls off the bone.
